Unit test verification ensures that code changes behave correctly without introducing regressions into existing functionality. The system runs the project's existing test suite (pytest for Python, jest for JavaScript/TypeScript, go test for Go, pytest for Ruby) and records the pass/fail status of each test. Additionally, the system can generate new unit tests for the specific changes made by the agent, ensuring that the fix is complete and that the test coverage is maintained or improved.

The verification process is essential because agents may produce code that passes compilation but fails behavioral expectations. A function might type-check correctly but produce incorrect output for edge cases. Unit test verification provides objective, repeatable evidence that the code behaves as intended.

■Existing Test Suite Execution

The system executes the project's full test suite in a clean sandbox environment, ensuring that no residual state from previous missions affects the results. Each test is run, and its pass/fail status is recorded. The system also captures: test execution time, any output or error messages, and coverage data (which lines of code were executed by the tests). All results are logged in the audit trail with the mission identifier.

If the existing test suite fails, the mission is not complete, and the agent must either fix the code to restore test passes or escalate to human review. The system provides detailed feedback on which tests failed and why, enabling the agent to adjust its approach.

The test suite execution supports: parallel test running (utilizing all available CPU cores for faster execution), test isolation (each test runs in an isolated environment to prevent cross-test contamination), and flaky test detection (tests that intermittently pass/fail are flagged for investigation).

■New Unit Test Generation

When the agent makes a code change, the system can automatically generate new unit tests that validate the change: the agent analyzes the code diff and the acceptance criteria, generates test cases that cover the new behavior, and runs the generated tests against the modified code. The generated tests are added to the project's test suite, ensuring that the fix is validated and that regression is prevented in the future.

The test generation system: analyzes the function's input/output signature, generates test cases for typical and edge-case inputs, runs the generated tests and records the results, and adds the tests to the suite with appropriate test annotations. The generated tests follow the project's testing conventions and style guidelines.

This automated test generation is particularly valuable for: bug fixes (ensuring the specific bug is covered by a new test), refactoring (ensuring the refactored code produces the same output), and new feature implementation (ensuring the new code is covered from the start).
